Whatever the mural lacks in nuance, it makes up for in size and clarity, serving as both a local and global reminder that all-out war isn’t the only ill effect of an increasingly militarized world—and that far too many of us need protection from the organizations that purport to protect us in the first place.

From my short piece on Blu’s recent mural in Salto di Quirra, which has been referred to as “Italy’s Chernobyl.”

Shortly after I took that portrait, the hunting party was attacked by a leopard. Both of the huntsmen were very badly mauled. The hunter tried to shoot the leopard, missed the leopard, and shot the tracker. That’s one instance. That’s why I initially thought that it would be fine to sit in the vehicle, but you can’t. And in all cases, I have a camera and everyone else has a rifle. You can’t question it because it’s your choice to be there, but it’s mind-numbingly frightening and it’s raw.

I spoke to David Chancellor, whose arresting photographs of tourist trophy hunters in Sub-Saharan Africa are part of a series of books exploring human-wildlife conflict.
