When science fiction films depict the future, the best writers and directors are often less concerned with accurately predicting how specific technologies might reshape the world than they are with confronting the moral or philosophical quandaries of present day. It’s what makes those stories compelling—and relatable. When futurists attempt to tell us how (and when) technology leaps will occur, they’re not only speculating about what we’re capable of achieving in the coming decades but also imploring us to prepare—scientifically and psychologically—for those events.

From my piece for Co.Exist on Envisioning Technology’s new infographic, which maps the future of health technology, from cryogenics to robotics to regeneration.

Assigning quantifiable value to an awareness or advocacy campaign is usually tricky, and there’s no guarantee that awareness begets a shift in behavior from walking to driving. Nonetheless, the campaign itself is a stroke of brilliance: It’s clever, infectious, and aesthetically pleasing, and it beautifully illustrates the significant difference between the small steps of a single person and the giant strides we can make when we walk together.

Somewhere between a fifth-grade science project and a meticulously arranged still life is the work of Caleb Charland. The artist fastens wires to fruit and trees and anything else he can find to create luminous installations, proving that alternative energy is all around us.

I talk to the artist Caleb Charland about his still-life photographs of fruit powering lights for Co.Exist.
